GLOSSARY

DCS

Distributed Control System
DEFINITION

A plant-wide control architecture that coordinates continuous processes across many controllers with deep redundancy and integration.

A Distributed Control System coordinates large, continuous processes — refineries, chemical plants, water treatment — across many distributed controllers, with heavy redundancy and tight integration into a central operations picture.

A DCS operates at a different scale from a Pi node. The Pi doesn't replace a DCS; it complements it at the edge, or replaces a DCS expansion that was really quoted for monitoring rather than plant-wide control.
